Ever wished there was a database into which you could type a product's name and learn not only its ingredients, but the potential toxicity of those same ingredients? Or maybe you're allergic to SLS as I am, and are curious to find toothpastes and shampoos and soaps that don't carry the ingredient. Search no more! Environmental Working Group has assembled just the thing: Skin Deep, a searchable database containing information on over 14,000 products from over 1,000 brands.
For fun, I entered "Weleda," one of our favorite baby care brands, into EWG's massive search engine. Turns out Lu's toothpaste scored a .1 on a toxicity scale of 1 - 5. Woo-hoo! My curiosity piqued, I then entered the name of my contact cleaner, Aosept, worried because a cursory review of other eye-care brands had set off a slew of red, "Danger, Danger!" signs. But I was relieved to see Aosept scored a .7 and had earned a "moderate" green light. Whew!
