It's no secret I hate plastic. And what's worse than plastic tupperware, plastic water bottles and the pair of purple plastic pants my grandmother gave me (no joke!) when I was ten?
Plastic in my food!
I'm sure everyone knows by now that the chemical melamine was found to be the culprit behind the tainted pet food. But did you know it was also found in food given to hogs, chickens and, as they've recently discovered, fish food? According to the FDA, we have nothing to worry about:
“There is very low risk to humans from eating pork, chicken and eggs from animals fed feeds supplemented with pet food scraps that contained melamine and related compounds, according to an assessment by federal scientists.”
Hm. Not sure if I believe it. One thing I do know: the food industry has a lot to learn still about the merits of going local. Maybe if feed fillers weren't produced half a world away, someone would catch these mishaps sooner.
